Hurricane Valley Symphony was organized in the fall of 2018. The founding
members were Heber White, Janelle Ruesch, Steven Saline, Kimber Dutton and Debbie Thornton.
Hurricane Valley Symphony began rehearsing and performing under the umbrella of Hurricane Valley Recreation until January of 2022, when we were incorporated as a 501(c)(3).
Our motivation for organizing Hurricane Valley Symphony was to provide students in the band and orchestra programs at Hurricane Middle School and Hurricane High School and music students who are home-schooled enhanced performance opportunities beyond what they could have in the public school setting. We also recognized the need to provide adults, who played in their earlier years, an opportunity to return to playing and performing.
We began rehearsals in 2018 with Heber White, Steven Saline, Janelle Ruesch, and Debbie Thornton as Conductors. Our first concert was December 20, 2018. Steven Saline and Heber White continued to conduct the Symphony until fall of 2024, when Nick Lanners and Ruth Batt became the Conductors.
Over the years, we have grown from approximately 20 members to our current full orchestra with 47 performers. We are staffed with a full wind and brass section, full string section, full percussion section including a harp player and a piano player.
We are funded by donations from community businesses and individual community members, player dues, and Washington County and Hurricane City RAP tax grants.
We currently rehearse and perform at Hurricane High School.
